5 Simple Ways to Relax and De-stress (quickly!)

This year’s pandemic has brought more stress & uncertainty than perhaps any other year. Now more than ever, so many of us are constantly seeking ways to relieve built-up tension, boost endorphins and surrender to deep relaxation. We all yearn to live a more care-free and relaxed life, and by following the steps that work well for you & your body, you can achieve this.

We’ve put together our top 5 tips for you to try (all within the comfort of your own home) to melt away your stress and tension within minutes!

#1 - Instantly relax your mind with the 4-7-8 breathing technique

Our mind is guided by our breathing… Deep, slow breaths encourage a clear, slow and relaxed mind. If you’re used to a fast-paced, stress-filled lifestyle, you may find it a little challenging to connect to your breathing at first, but continue to practise and we promise it will get easier! Here’s our favourite breathing technique by Dr Weil for instant relaxation:

Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise.

  1. Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
  2. Close your mouth and INHALE quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
  3. HOLD your breath for a count of seven.
  4. EXHALE completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.
  5. This is one breath… Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

Note that with this breathing technique, you always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth. Exhalation takes twice as long as inhalation. The absolute time you spend on each phase is not important; the ratio of 4:7:8 is important. If you have trouble holding your breath, speed the exercise up but keep to the ratio of 4:7:8 for the three phases. With practice you can slow it all down and get used to inhaling and exhaling more and more deeply.

This simple exercise takes almost no time, can be done anywhere and is powerful for reducing anxiety, responding calmly and falling asleep easily!

#2 - Calm your nervous system with this stress-healing yoga session

Yoga has profound benefits for our mental and physical health. When we experience stress continually over a period of time, the tension in our body builds, so it’s important to release that build-up through movement. We love this 20 minute yoga session by Yoga With Adriene for reducing cortisol levels and healing stress.

#3 - Create a calm sanctuary with aromatherapy

To clear the energy of your home, or your space, diffuse the Calm Signature Blend essential oil in your diffuser or burner. This is the signature aromatherapy scent of the Gaia Day Spa, made with 100% pure essential oils. It will restore calm and tranquility in your surroundings and instantly evoke the sense of a day spa experience.
